Personal information

Thanks for visiting! My full name is Michael Jonathan Aimes Clark and I live in the United Kingdom. For half the year I am at Cambridge, studying Computer Science at Queens’ College, and for the other half I work on personal projects or find paid employment.

My formal curriculum vitae is concisely targeted towards potential employers and available as a PDF document. I am intensely interested in any work proposals outside of the academic terms (especially internships).

Sports

Rowing is my favourite sport. I took it up in the first term at Cambridge and have continued it ever since. After a year of training I managed to join Queens’ M1, the first boat at my Cambridge college. Together we achieved unparallelled success thanks to an awesome crew. I consider getting blades one of my favourite achievements at Cambridge (going up four or more places in bumps) and I am proud to have rowed in that boat.

When I am not rowing I am a keen fan of martial arts and general gym workouts. I began attending Kodenkan Danzan-Ryu Jujitsu classes in May 2007 at the Gatwick dojo and have since tried Taekwondo and Judo for a term at Cambridge. Gym is essential for most of these sports. I try to adapt routines to improve results, using my Strength Level Calculator to track progress respecting both 1-rep-max and bodymass.

Reading

Learning outside my syllabus is helpful to grasp an in-depth understanding of course material. I try to keep in touch with the latest developments using Hacker News and reading articles from individual blogs like Information Architects (personal favourite) and Joel on Software.

Outside of software development, I enjoy books ranging from philosophical works to science fiction, with Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card being a firm favourite of mine. Whenever I have a spare few days I try to get through self-improvement non-fiction books like Stephen Covey’s The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Music

Playing the guitar has been a passion of mine since 2001. In the future I hope to devote more time to practise and improve my technique, eventually reaching a high enough level to confidently play in public.

It’s a bonus being at Cambridge. Every show is a delight to watch.
